A Slightly different offering this time - I was on holiday on the south coast at the Hampshire - Dorset border. This picturesque cliff top location offerred some great views of the Solent and the Isle of Wight.
The Holiday Kit consists of an Asda DAB228 DAB/FM Receiver. This is a tiny device - about twice the size of a PP3 battery. At sub £25 3 years ago I was a little dubious of it's quality. The branch offer a money back guarantee. The headphones were very tinny but having replaced them with some sony earbuds I've found the radio to be a reasonable performer. It's DAB and FM Radio with RDS. sure the display is basic but the receiver is pretty good on both bands if not a little battery hungry on DAB.
Having been to this location with this radio I know what to expect. The southern half of the country was enjoying blue skies and hot weather thanks to a high pressure system holding the low and it's associated poorer weather off to the north.
Nothing spectacular on DAB but for a short while a multiplex with BBC Devon was audible.

Not reported much for a while. Having changed vehicles last October and not been able to use the retro fitted Alpine CD/Radio I had wondered if I would hear much in the way of Broadcast DX. The Alpine had a very sensistive (and selective tuner) and always seemed to beat other cars installations hands down. Anyway I'm now using a standard built in unit with lots of nice features but not really sure about it's sensitivity.
This morning found the following while making the commute along the A617 - nothing earth shattering but stuff I've not heard before along this route.
95.7 BBC Cambridgeshire - 103.6 BBC Northampton - 103.5 BBC Essex and Rutland on 107.2MHz.
19th June 2007
Not heard much of any note for a while but this evening's drive threw up a couple of Spanish and Italian Sounding stations plus on 107.00Mhz English speaking station with RDS "POWER NET", no idea where this is from.

The last month or so has been pretty good for sporadic e openings, the last week has thrown up a lot of French, Spanish and North African stations, in a lot of cases not strong enough for RDS display. I have heard Dawn FM run by Karminia Institue on 107.6 in Nottingham on a few occassions beleiving it to be a strong station from France or North Africa until the RDS kicked in.
This morning offered some interesting Tropo. A lot of different repeaters evident on 2 mtrs and 70cms. I tried several calls on 145.500 without success, simplex contacts can be hard to find at the best of times, but Tropo seems to get the activity going even more than usual on the repeaters.
I heard these stations from Kings Mill in Mansfield
105.2Mhz Kerrang , 104.7Mhz Minster, 103.7 BBC Radio York, 102.7 Hereward FM, 106.1 Touch FM and 100.7 Heart FM. Nothing really exotic but not stations I'd normally get there.
7th July 2006
Another interesting day for Sporadic E. 13.30 ish in Ilkeston found Arabic
and Spanish on 87.6 and 87.7Mhz.
17:00 in the Newark area produced "CATINFO" on 87.6Mhz and on 87.5 a flurry of activity with changing RDS including "CARAERA" "FATIMA" and "LUTIMO"
25th June 2006
87.5Mhz "SUBASIO" while driving in Lincoln
22nd June 2006
A quick jaunt through Nottingham found "87,SRADI" on 87.5Mhz
18th June 2006
Holly logged RDS Display "Subasio" on 101.7Mhz
13th June 2006
I had heard reports of a few Sporadic E and Tropo openings in the last few
days but not noticed anything until today when the morning commute yielded:
87.7Mhz, bursts of Spanish Including RDS "Radio 4", Italian and French (RDS "MARITIMA" ) France Inter (RDS "INTER") from the Mont-De-Marsan TX Site. Also competing in the background was an English Speaking RSL.
88.0Mhz, Radio Union from Spain (RDS "R,UNION")
88.7Mhz, Spanish Speaking station
102.6 (RDS, "CANAL EX") Spanish. Canal Extremadura Radio
The journey home gave:
87.6Mhz Italian footy Commentary until around 17:55 when a stronger Czech station took over with RDS display "IMPULS"
87.7Mhz "FUNRADIO" on RDS playing a selection of Pop. Not a language I reconised, maybe Slovakian broadcaster.
2nd February 2006
The last few days have seen a high pressure system anchored over the UK.
Conditions certainly have been interesting. Personally I have nothing spectacular
to report for the FM Broadcast Band except for BBC
Cymru on 103.4Mhz (Good Stereo and RDS) along the A617 between Newark
and Mansfield 07:30 31/01 and 01/02. Have heard reports of Spain and France
being very strong in other parts of the country.
Nothing noted on DAB or Digital Terrestial TV.
During the evenings of 31/1 and 1/2 distinct patterning and lines were noticeable on analogue signals from Waltham. A scan found signals on every channel between 29 and 45, Including Channel 4 from Sandy Heath on 21, BBC One South on 39.
The two metre ham band threw up some interesting simplex contacts mainly into North Yorkshire and The Black Country. Finding a clear frequency was the hardest part. I had a reply from G3NSY (Shropshire?) while passing Junction 25 of the M1 but we were unable to find a clear frequency and lost contact.
2nd November 2005
I have not noticed much in the way of broadcast dx of late however the conditions
were pretty good on the 2mtr Ham Band during the afternoon.
I managed a few simplex contacts while mobile between Nottingham and Leicester to stations in the Stourbridge - Kidderminster area. Also worked through a repeater near Swindon while driving along the A46 near Newark. Around 5PM I did hear a few repeaters with a large number of Scouse accents and EI and GI callsigns suggesting that the conditions were favourable to the Northwest rather than the usual south west to north east line that occurs in the Trent Valley.
Nothing of note on FM Broadcast or DAB, I have yet to see a lift on DAB. The analogue TV did throw up a lot more channels, mainly local relays normally out of range. Channel Four (West Country Region identified by Teletext) was very strong around 10PM despite being on an adjacent channel to the local Belmont TX. As before no special aerials just a wideband beam pointing at Waltham.
As can be seen from the above picture the reception was not good enough for real use of Teletext but ok to help identify the region.Nothing noted on Digital Terrestial TV but the Kids did complain that the ITV Channels from Waltham were breaking up and freezing on the indoor aerial. The ITV MUX is the weakest I receive from Waltham.
7th July 2005
A bit of an opening between 07:20 and 08:00. (Sporadic E's?). A first for
me, French Broadcast Stations coming through in the car around Mansfield.
these were at the bottom end of the FM Broadcast Band but no RDS display
although good stereo reception. However I did hear R Maria on 87.00Mhz with
RDS. I'm yet to find out where this one is from.
Also logged on 107.5 an Italian speaking station with the RDS display of * RDS * Thought to be 107.5 - 'RDS' from Monte Faito, Naples
and also logged on 107.1 Radio 24 from Italy. Station Website Link

Things seem to have quitened down a bit after the excitement of the last
few days. This evenings trip only yielded
87.9 Dutch station Zeeland with RDS display "ZEELAND"
88.00 not the usual suspect Radio Two this time. Sounded like dutch language not quite the same. A lot of references to places in Belgium. Perhaps a Flemish or Walloon speaking broadcaster.
8th September 2004

Dutch Station Yorin FM. 87.7Mhz. Previously reported on these pages. Received
along A46 Newark to Nottingham, then through the city and on to Mansfield.
Heard using standard car equipment. I'm usually happy to hear Dutch stations
but unfortunately Yorin FM was flattening local RSL Station Boundary
Sound during their 2nd day of broadcasting.
103.4Mhz BBC Cymru at various locations around the Trent Valley
Another Dutch Station Radio 2 popped up on 88.00Mhz at around 08:00 and was a rock crushing signal. No noticable noise with the signal. RDS Display switching between "RADIO 2" and "R2 TROS". Receiver also displaying EON (Enhanced Other Networks) and TP symbols. Link to the official site.
106.4Mhz Vibe FM from Peterborough was very strong in Nottingham Town Centre.
